Optical Brightener OB General Information and Properties

Empirical Formula

C26H26N2O2S

Appearance

Light Yellow Powder

Melting Point

196-203°

Applications:

  • Plastics: Optical Brightener OB is used as a fluorescent brightening agent in plastics, including PVC, polyethylene, polypropylene, cellulose acetate, polystyrene, polycarbonate, acrylics, polyurethane, linear polyester, and polyamides (nylon).

  • Synthetic fiber: Optical Brightener OB creates exceptional fluorescent brightness within synthetic fibers like polyester, polypropylene, acrylic and nylon.

  • Adhesives & Sealants: OB has a particular use within adhesives and sealants. Not only can it be used as a whitener and brightener, but it can also be applied as a tracer ensuring uniform coverage for an adhesive or sealant.

  • Printing Inks: OB has the ability to combine with dyes and produce particularly bright shades, especially pronounced in pastel shades. It can also be used in tracer inks for quick identification of forgeries, like seen on some bank notes.

Advantages:

  • Disperses more evenly compared to other optical brighteners

  • Has a brilliant, bluish white effect used to compensate natural yellowing

  • Light fastness and low volatility

  • A distinct use as a tracer for adhesives and sealants

  • Produces brilliant color shades when mixed with dyes

  • FDA cleared for use in all polymers and adhesives

  • Does not require additional milling in coating and ink applications

Optical Brightener OB

Fluorescent Whitening Agent for Plastics and Synthetic Fibers

CAS # 7128-64-5

Optical Brightener OB is a plastic whitening agent used for its unique chemical properties to add brightness to an array of materials. It is solvent soluble, heat resistant, and chemically stable for use in polymers like polyethylene, polypropylene, PVC, polystyrene, acrylics, polyester and nylon. Its use offsets the natural yellowness of polymers and yields a whiter appearance. The optical brightener absorbs UV light and modifies the wavelength as visible light in the blue range which creates brilliance in a fluorescent manner.
This product is particularly useful in the production of plastics and synthetic fibers, because of its distinct melting point, it can be easily used in processes which require heating and melting. OB’s signature feature is dispersion. This creates better stability and less exudation (bleed) in the application and leads to long-lasting whitening effects. OB has better dispersibility than its counterpart OB-1 (which has a higher melting point) leading to its benefits within specific productions, especially ink coatings and plastics that do not require the highest temperatures.
